Lithium battery are classified according to packaging form, and are mainly divided into three types: cylindrical battery , prismatic battery , and pouch battery .

Cylindrical battery were invented by Sony and were used in early consumer batteries. Tesla popularized them in the field of electric vehicles. In 1991, Sony invented the world's first commercial lithium battery - the 18650 cylindrical battery, starting the commercialization process of lithium batteries. In September 2020, Tesla officially released the 4680 large cylindrical battery, which has a cell capacity that is five times higher than that of the 21700 battery, and the cost has been further optimized. Cylindrical batteries are widely used in overseas electric vehicle markets: except Tesla, many car companies are equipped with cylindrical batteries now.

Cylindrical battery shells and positive electrode caps are generally made of nickel-iron alloy or aluminum alloy materials with a thickness of about 0.3mm. The application of laser welding in cylindrical batteries mainly includes protective valve cap welding & busbar positive & negative electrode welding, Busbar-PACK bottom plate welding, and battery inner tab welding.
